Text description provided by architects. Located in the unique fishing village of Ericeira, The Capsule Cafe has transformed an uncharacteristic commercial space into a restaurant with unique features, linked to the “Project Kitchen” concept that serves as a base for various chefs and gastronomic experiences.
The starting point of the project was the identity characteristics of the surroundings, with particular emphasis on the color palette – blue and white, prevalent in most building facades, the sky, clouds and the Atlantic Ocean, reinterpreting them and giving the space the desired contemporaryness and expressiveness.
In the concept of this café and bistro, the informality and relaxed atmosphere desired are contrasted with the precision of the design. All details, textures, finishes, furniture, lighting and technical requirements have been paid attention to. With a reduced storefront facing one street, the façade intervention was the introduction of two axial windows, with large dimensions, inviting one to enter the space. An illuminated banner and flag were also designed to advertise The Capsule Cafe.
The interior space is designed like a "diner" with a narrow and elongated floor plan, highlighting table seating with direct service from the open kitchen on one side and tables and sofas on the other. On the counter facing the entrance are an impressive coffee machine and three prime chairs by the window. Technical areas and toilets are offered, hidden behind a blue curtain.
The surfaces – floor, walls and ceiling – are painted in light grey, allowing the required neutrality to highlight the main elements in white – the glazed tile table, the furniture made of painted steel, and the blue color of the lamps, curtain and accessories. The sofas, with their nappa-covered cushions, contrast with the recycled plastic table tops, tables and chairs.
The project focused on aesthetics, materials, finishes, textures, lighting and all constructive elements, enhancing the feeling of comfort.
